In 1745 the English Privy Council granted all land between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers in the Virginia colony to Lord Fairfax, including today’s Fairfax County and Falls Church, home of SDE Brewing. The 6th Lord Fairfax was George Washington’s mentor, neighbor, employer, and friend. The relationship between Lord Fairfax and Washington stretched from Washington’s teenage years until the end of the Baron’s life and its impact on Washington was significant. In part, Washington’s failure to achieve Fairfax’s landed wealth and status pushed him into rebellion against Britain in the 1770s. Despite being Revolutionary War foes, their friendship endured throughout the war and Fairfax was the only English royal ever to reside permanently in the American colonies.
